All on 4 is an implant method that replaces missing teeth with only 4 dental implants.

The All-on-4 technique involves precise angular placement of implants that allow the same stable results as you would expect from a standard implant treatment except that it involves a far less invasive and time-consuming procedure. In this article, we will be answering some of the frequently asked questions surrounding the All on 4 treatment and its success rate.

What are the criteria of an ideal candidate for All on 4?

All on 4 is suitable for almost any person who has missing teeth and wants to replace them with functional and beautiful teeth. It is highly recommended for patients who have considered getting implant-supported teeth in the past but hesitated due to the lengthy treatment duration (including long healing times) and the invasive nature of the surgical procedures involved.

Due to the advanced All on 4 technique, the number of implants that need to be placed is significantly reduced. As such, this technique allows patients to avoid the need for bone grafting, which is commonly required for patients with inadequate bone support in the jaw. For this reason, patients who have insufficient bone support to qualify for conventional implants can opt for All on 4 treatment.

That said, the dentist would evaluate your condition before confirming you as a suitable candidate for the All on 4 procedure.

What are considerations that may influence the success of the treatment?

This fact alone speaks volumes of All on 4 as a clinically proven technique in terms of highly predictable outcomes. However, as with any dental or medical surgical procedure, treatment results vary from dentist to dentist. To achieve precision and accuracy for creating a lifelike set of artificial teeth anchored on only 4 implants, it is important to choose a highly trained and experienced implant dentist.

To ensure the longevity of your implants, patients should also follow the dentist’s instructions on overall health, dietary and oral homecare routine. For example, patients should limit the use of tobacco until the wound has healed.

Is the treatment painful?

During the procedure, the dentist will administer sedative medications and local anaesthetics to keep you comfortable – and free from anxiety – throughout the surgery.

As with any surgical dental procedure, you can expect some post-operative discomfort. However, the pain is relatively mild and should not last more than a few days. In the interim, it can be managed with prescription medication such as painkillers.

Are there any side effects of the treatment? How much rest do I need? Will it affect my ability to work?

Following the procedure, you can expect minimal bleeding and some swelling – which is the body’s reaction to surgery and healing. However, both swelling and bleeding should go away within hours to a few days following treatment.

You will need to rest during the initial 48 hours after surgery, meaning no strenuous physical activity. After that, you may resume work and other activities, as tolerated.
